The situation
Head impacts and concussion are a growing worry in contact sports, especially for young players. HeadX needed a system that measured head acceleration accurately in real time, was easy to use on the touchline and gave coaches, parents and medical staff detailed analysis afterwards.
What we questioned first
- What do people need in the moment? We worked with coaches and medical professionals so the pitch-side app shows the right information at a glance, monitors several players at once and alerts on dangerous impacts.
- What can’t we afford to lose?Impact data. The firmware was built to minimise data loss and to be efficient enough to last a full match.
- Where does it go next?Built so the data can join wider athlete management systems as the product grows.
What we built
Firmware for the headband’s accelerometers, a mobile app receiving data over Bluetooth in real time, and a web app for reviewing each player’s impact history, comparing players and sharing reports with medical professionals.
What changed
An integrated system across hardware, mobile and web that gives coaches, parents and medical staff the information they need to make decisions about a young player’s safety.
How we’d work on this today. Hardware, mobile and web in one product means many moving parts. Shipping it piece by piece, with a senior review at every step, is how the fractional team keeps a product like this reliable as it grows. For product companies
