# Enspire City: making engineering careers playable for children

Enginuity wanted children excited about engineering and manufacturing. We built an animated, gamified city with accessibility designed in from the start, shaped by feedback sprint after sprint.

Accessible by design

- **Client:** Enginuity, the engineering and manufacturing skills charity

- **Built:** Enspire City, a gamified learning platform

- **Key call:** Accessibility from day one, not as a retrofit

- **Technology:** Next.js

## The situation

Enginuity exists to close the skills gap in engineering and manufacturing. It wanted a platform that would spark children’s interest: educational without feeling like homework, simple for young users, and inclusive for children with visual impairments and other access needs.

## What we questioned first

- **How do we keep children coming back?** Badges, challenges and new areas of the city to discover as they progress, so learning feels like play.
- **Who might be left out?** Accessibility was designed in from the outset.
- **How do we know it works for children?** Agile sprints with Enginuity’s design team, so feedback shaped the platform as it was built.

## What we built

An animated cityscape where children explore real-world engineering challenges, built in Next.js to handle complex animation and real-time interaction without losing performance.

## What changed

Enspire City has had positive feedback from educators, parents and the children who use it. It’s live at [enspire-city.enginuity.org](https://enspire-city.enginuity.org/).

> As with all projects that Fluff helped us with, they were instrumental in getting us successfully launched on time, and to budget.

**David Ivell**, CIO/CTO, Enginuity

**How we’d work on this today.** Experiences for young people only work if they’re tested with young people. Short release cycles make that possible, which is how the fractional team works every week. [For education and skills](https://www.fluff.software/for/education-and-skills/)
