# Is AI-written code safe?

AI coding tools are fast and capable, and their output still needs review. What goes wrong with AI-generated code, what a senior review checks, and what to ask any supplier.

## Short answer

AI-written code is as safe as the review it gets. The tools write plausible code quickly, but they miss security fundamentals and edge cases often enough that research in 2026 keeps finding serious flaws in AI-built apps. A senior developer who designs, reviews and tests the work before it ships is what makes it safe.

## How we use AI tools

Openly, and every day. They’re why we’re quick, and why our subscription costs less than you’d expect. A senior developer designs the approach, reviews what the tools produce and tests it before it reaches you. Nothing ships just because a tool produced it.

## What goes wrong with AI-generated code

- **Missing access controls.** The code works for the person testing it and works for everyone else too, including people who shouldn’t see the data.
- **Secrets in the wrong place.** Keys in front-end code or committed to the repository.
- **The happy path only.** Errors, retries, timeouts and odd inputs are where tools are weakest.
- **Confident mistakes.** Plausible code calling functions or settings that don’t quite exist, or exist with different behaviour.
- **Drift.** Each new prompt adds code without revisiting the old, until nobody understands the whole.

Independent scans of AI-built apps in 2026 have repeatedly found these patterns in live production systems. [The production checklist](https://www.fluff.software/guides/ai-prototype-to-production-checklist/) covers the details.

## What a senior review checks

- Does it solve the problem in the request, for real users and real data?
- Who can access what, and is that enforced on the server?
- What happens when things fail?
- Does it fit the existing codebase, or fight it?
- Would the next developer understand it?
- Are the important paths tested?

## What to ask any supplier

- Do you use AI tools, and where?
- Who reviews AI-assisted code before it reaches us, and how senior are they?
- Where does our code live, and who owns it?
- Will you work under our NDA and security policies?

Our answers: yes, throughout; a senior developer reviews every release; in your repositories, and you own it; and of course.

## Questions

Does using AI tools make development cheaper?

Yes, when it’s done well. The build itself is faster, which is why our subscription costs less than you’d expect. What you pay for is the judgment the tools can’t supply.

Will our code or data be used to train AI models?

Ask any supplier this directly. We’re happy to work under your NDA and security policies and agree how tools are used on your code.
